Poultry Care: The Importance Of Grit
Grit is necessary for poultry due to them having no teeth to grind up their food with. They require small amounts of grit, which they hold in their gizzard, and as food passes through the gizzard the grit mashes it into a paste, a bit like a mortar and pestle. The food can then safely pass into the digestive tract. When the grit in the gizzard is worn down into tiny pieces, it too can safely pass through the digestive tract.
